The caption names a machine built by someone called Pischoff, photographed in 1908, a year when powered flight was moving quickly from experiment to public spectacle. The print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a New York news photography archive whose pictures were made for newspapers and distributed to editors. Early aircraft of this kind were fragile, usually wire-braced wood and fabric frames, and photographs like this one show how inventors presented their designs to a public still unsure whether heavier-than-air flight was practical. The plain, documentary framing is typical of newspaper work from the period.
