Ludlow's aeroplane is an enlargement from a single frame of a motion picture made by the American Mutoscope & Biograph Company, so the image shows the softness and grain of film rather than a studio plate. The identification of the machine and its name come from an old caption card that has not been verified, so treat the attribution as a lead rather than settled fact. The picture dates to the years before the Wright brothers' public flights of 1908, when powered flight was still experimental and motion pictures gave audiences some of their first moving views of such attempts.
