An orderly line is a safe line!" urges this 1941 silkscreen poster, asking New Yorkers to queue calmly during air raid drills instead of rushing for cover. The designer signed only the monogram "BEN," and the print came out of the Federal Art Project, part of the Work Projects Administration, which produced public information posters for government agencies. The United States was not yet at war, but New York was already rehearsing civil defense procedures in case of attack, and the poster's blunt message reflects that effort.
