*Houston, Santa Anna, and Cos* places three central figures of the Texas Revolution side by side in a New York print from 1836, made after a design by the political caricaturist Edward Williams Clay and published by Henry R. Robinson. Mexican general Martín Perfecto de Cos had surrendered San Antonio to Texan forces in December 1835, and his presence here points to the campaign that followed. Santa Anna's army later overran the Alamo and the Goliad garrison, the events the print's subject list links to James Walker Fannin's death. Sam Houston's victory at San Jacinto in April 1836 turned those losses into the war's decisive moment, and American audiences followed it closely.
