The Steamboat House takes its name from the paddle-wheelers that once docked along Buffalo Bayou, which made Houston a working river port. By 1863 the town was a busy inland hub for cotton and goods moving between the bayou and Galveston Bay, even as the Civil War strained trade along the Texas coast. The print records a building from that wartime moment, when the bayou was central to daily life and commerce. Its setting and construction offer useful clues to how the town lived and traded during those years.
