Few German home-front posters pair an angel with a military helmet, but this 1916 color lithograph by W. Battermann does just that to promote the Altonaer Kriegshilfe's Blumentag, or flower day. Altona was then a separate city on the edge of Hamburg, and such charity days raised money for soldiers and their families, often by selling flowers or small tokens to passersby. The mix of angels, flowers and helmets shows how wartime appeals wrapped military sacrifice in familiar, sentimental imagery. It offers a useful view of the fundraising culture and economic strain in German cities during the First World War.
