Nathaniel Currier issued this hand-colored lithograph, titled simply *Charlotte*, from his New York shop sometime between 1835 and 1856, before his partnership with James Merritt Ives began in 1857. The Gale Research catalog raisonné of Currier & Ives lists it as number 1115, the standard reference for the firm's output. Currier's shop produced inexpensive lithographs in large numbers, and many were colored by hand, often by workers on a production line, so each sheet can show slight differences in color. Looking closely at the line and tint is a good way to see how these popular prints were made.
