Titled *The colored beauty*, this 1877 lithograph belongs to a group of comic subjects that Currier & Ives, the New York firm, sold widely in the 1870s as inexpensive prints for a mass market. Many of the firm's figure subjects drew on racial stereotypes common in popular American humor after the Civil War. The title alone signals the joke, so viewers should read the image as evidence of how Black Americans were caricatured for entertainment, not as a neutral portrait. The print is listed as number 1322 in Gale Research's catalog raisonné of the firm's work.
