A lithograph with a hunting-field theme, this print shows Black figures staging a parody of a fox hunt, with one rider's headlong fall captured in the title's "taking a header." Currier & Ives issued it around 1885 as part of its Darktown series of comic caricatures, which relied on minstrel-show stereotypes to ridicule Black Americans' social aspirations. Today it is best read as evidence of how mass-market imagery in the Gilded Age framed race, and its racist content is part of its historical significance.
