Glen Echo, in Montgomery County, Maryland, is the subject of this glass negative, one of many views the National Photo Company made of the Washington area in the early twentieth century. The park grew out of a Chautauqua-style assembly grounds in the 1890s and became a popular amusement destination reached by trolley from the capital, drawing families for rides, dances and summer outings along the Potomac. The company's photographers recorded such places for sale as souvenirs and postcards. Glass negatives of this period often show streaks and blemishes from the aging of their coatings, so the surface marks here are worth noting as part of the object's history.
