Ellis Island in New York Harbor was the main federal immigration station for arrivals by sea from 1892 until 1954, and this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection shows the arrival process it was built to handle. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency, sold images of current events and places to newspapers, so pictures like this one were made for a press audience rather than as fine art. The record gives no date, so the exact year is uncertain, but the subject fits the station's busiest decades, when millions of immigrants passed through its registry hall before being examined by inspectors.
