This negative is titled for the dock at Ellis Island, the landing point where ferries carried arrivals from steamships in New York Harbor to the federal immigration station. The island opened as the main inspection center in 1892, and millions of newcomers passed through its buildings before the station closed in 1954. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a news photo agency that worked mainly in the early twentieth century. The record gives no firm date, and the title came from the agency's own notes, so the exact view and year remain uncertain.
