Ellis Island is the subject here, and this glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, which holds the work of the Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The island in New York Harbor served as the main federal immigration station from 1892 to 1954, when millions of arrivals passed through its registry room and medical inspections before entering the country. The record gives no exact date for this negative, and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the scene is best read as one of the many documentary views of the station and its approaches.
