Ellis Island, the small island in New York Harbor, served as the main immigrant processing station for the United States from 1892 until 1954, when it was largely shut down. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of pictures produced by the Bain News Service, a commercial news photo agency active in New York in the early twentieth century. The record gives no exact date and notes that the title comes from unverified caption information, so the view is best read as a general document of the station's buildings and arrivals rather than a confirmed record of one moment. Its glass-plate format reflects the photographic technology of the period.
