Ellis Island, the federal immigration station in New York Harbor, is the subject of this glass negative, though its record gives no date and the title is only provisionally attributed to the Bain News Service. The island opened as an immigration depot in 1892, and for more than sixty years its ferries and registry halls processed millions of people arriving from Europe and elsewhere before it closed in 1954. Bain News Service, a New York photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, supplied pictures of city and harbor scenes to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Because the image survives on glass, its buildings and waterfront retain fine detail that makes them useful for close study.
