This woodcut comes from Bickerstaff's Boston Almanack for 1778, a small annual that combined a calendar, astronomical tables, and weather forecasts with woodcut illustrations and occasional wit. The record does not name the scene, so its exact subject is uncertain. Still, the image shows how printers in Revolutionary-era Boston used cheap block prints to make a utilitarian pamphlet more appealing to readers. Almanacs were among the most widely read printed works in colonial and wartime America, often kept in homes for decades, and their illustrations were usually carved from wood blocks that printers reused across editions.
