Snow blankets Boston Common in this view from the morning of February 29, 1884, which the record labels as View No. 2. The print is credited to Messrs. Allen & Rowell and their new dry-plate process, a technique that replaced wet collodion plates that had to be coated and exposed before they dried. Dry plates made outdoor work far more practical, since photographers could prepare them ahead of time and carry them into the cold. Boston Common, the city's oldest public park, dates to 1634, though the catalog details here come from an older caption card that has not been independently verified.
