Taken on the morning of February 29, 1884, this view shows Boston Common under snow, a leap-day morning caught on glass. The print is credited to Messrs. Allen & Rowell and described as made with their new dry-plate process, which had largely replaced wet collodion plates by the 1880s and made outdoor exposures far quicker. Boston Common, laid out in 1634, was a favorite spot for winter walks and skating, so the picture records a familiar civic space at a time when street-level photography was becoming practical. The record itself is marked unverified, so treat the date and maker as the caption's claims.
