Taken on the morning of February 29, 1884, this view of Boston Common is one of a numbered series of winter scenes, credited in its record to the firm of Messrs. Allen & Rowell and their new dry-plate process. Gelatin dry plates had largely replaced the older wet collodion method by the 1880s, making exposures faster and letting photographers work outdoors without hauling a darkroom along. Boston Common, set aside as common land in 1634, is generally regarded as the oldest public park in the United States, so a snowbound view of it captures the city's oldest green space in a rare quiet season.
