Forest Hills Cemetery, opened in 1848 in Jamaica Plain, was one of the rural cemeteries that shaped how Americans thought about burial grounds as parkland, and this view records the memorial to Martin Milmore, the Irish-born sculptor who worked in Boston and made several Civil War monuments. The photograph comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns, landscapes and monuments from about the 1890s into the 1920s for travel sales and publication. The caption card does not give a date, so the print is best read as a snapshot of how a sculptor's grave was presented to visitors of that era.
