Ho Kom Tong is the name the Bain News Service gave this negative, and the record marks it as unverified, so the title is the only firm identifier we have. The name suggests a Chinese association or meeting hall, a type of institution that was central to community life in Chinese American neighborhoods during the early twentieth century. Bain News Service, a Manhattan-based press agency, supplied photographs to newspapers from about 1899 to the early 1930s, and its pictures of urban street life and civic institutions are a valuable record of that period. Viewers interested in this image should check the Bain caption cards and the Library of Congress catalog for any later corrections to the name and date.
