Few national conventions dragged on as long as the Democrats' 1924 meeting in New York, which convened at Madison Square Garden in the summer heat and took 103 ballots before delegates chose John W. Davis. This glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines and recorded much of the political life of the period. The convention was also marked by a bitter floor fight over whether to condemn the Ku Klux Klan by name, a plank that was narrowly rejected and that exposed deep divisions within the party. Keep in mind that the title comes from the original cataloging notes, which were not verified, so the scene should be read with some caution.
