The record identifies this glass negative as the national headquarters of the Woman's Party, the organization led by Alice Paul that pressed for a federal woman suffrage amendment in the 1910s. Its headquarters in Washington, D.C., a short walk from the White House, served as the base for the party's lobbying, publicity, and picketing campaigns. The photograph comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with news pictures and was run by George Grantham Bain. The record gives no date, but the agency's glass negatives generally date from the early twentieth century, and the building's role places this image within the final push for the 19th Amendment, ratified in 1920.
