The only identifying detail for this negative is its title, "Homer," which the Bain News Service recorded on the glass plate or its caption card. The Library of Congress notes that the name is unverified, and no date survives. George Grantham Bain founded the agency in New York around 1899 to supply newspapers with news and feature pictures for decades, and its glass negatives document American life in the early twentieth century. Because the subject cannot be confirmed from the record, the image is best understood as one example of that wire-service output, where captions were often brief and sometimes incomplete.
