This glass negative shows Babe Ruth, the Yankees slugger, on a date that appears in the title as March 23, 1922, though the record notes that the title comes from unverified data written on the negatives or caption cards. Ruth had joined the Yankees in 1920 and had already reshaped the game with his home run hitting, so a portrait from this period captures him at the height of his fame. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, produced thousands of pictures of athletes, politicians and public figures, and its glass negatives are now part of the Library of Congress collection. Its glass plates offer a detailed view of early twentieth-century press photography.
