Ruth Draper, the American monologist known for her sharp character sketches performed alone on stage, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that operated from the early 1900s into the 1920s, supplied news and celebrity pictures to newspapers, and its glass plates were often captioned on the negative sleeve or a card rather than dated precisely. The record gives no firm date, so the image is best understood as a portrait of a performer whose one-woman shows drew wide attention in that era. Draper's ability to play many characters with only a few props made her a striking figure for press photographers to capture.
