Babe Ruth posing with a mascot is one of the lighter moments captured in the George Grantham Bain Collection, the large body of glass negatives produced by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of current events from the early twentieth century. Ruth, the Yankees slugger who became the most famous ballplayer of the 1920s, was a frequent subject for press photographers, and this image shows the kind of staged, good-humored publicity shot that helped keep him in the public eye. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion is unknown, but the glass negative format places it within the agency's working years.
