The record offers little beyond the title for this glass negative, which names its subjects as Christian refugees from Asia Minor, the Anatolian region of present-day Turkey. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The title most likely points to the early 1920s, when the Greco-Turkish War and the 1923 population exchange under the Treaty of Lausanne uprooted Greek Orthodox and Armenian communities that had lived in Anatolia for generations. With no date or location recorded, the picture is best read as a document of that wider displacement.
