The surname on this glass negative is recorded as Brandstorm, but the Bain News Service supplied that title from its own negatives or caption cards, and the spelling has not been verified. Bain was a New York photo agency that sold pictures of people and events in the news to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates now form the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. With no date on record, the sitter and occasion remain unconfirmed, though the name may be a variant of Elsa Brändström, a Swedish Red Cross nurse who worked with prisoners of war in Siberia during the First World War. Treat that link as a lead to check rather than a settled identification.
