The only identifying detail in this record is the name "Mardones," which the Library of Congress took from caption information written by the Bain News Service and has not independently verified. Bain was a New York picture agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its collection includes many portraits of performers, politicians and other public figures. No date is recorded, so the year of this picture is unknown, but the small glass negative format was standard for press work of that period. Many Bain negatives survive mainly through their caption data, so the name and the agency's notes are the main clues to who is pictured.
