Fritz Thyssen is the sitter named in this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Thyssen was a German industrialist whose steel and coal interests in the Ruhr made him one of the more prominent business figures of his era, and he later became an early financial backer of the Nazi Party in the 1930s. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, produced and distributed images like this one in the early twentieth century, so the portrait reflects the news-driven demand for pictures of notable figures. The record gives no date or photographer, and the identification comes from the agency's own caption cards, so it is worth treating the name as provisional.
