The title, "Mardones," is the only identifying detail in the record, and it comes from unverified notes made by the Bain News Service, so the sitter, place, and date remain unconfirmed. George Grantham Bain founded the New York agency around 1899 to supply newspapers with photographs of current events and public figures. Its glass negatives, like this one, were made quickly for daily publication, and they now document how the working news photographer operated in the early twentieth century.
