Samuel Lionel "Roxy" Rothafel is the man named in this glass negative, a showman who ran some of the largest movie palaces in New York during the 1910s and 1920s. The Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures, made the image, and its caption cards are the source of the name. Rothafel's reputation rested on elaborate stage shows staged alongside silent films, and his picture would have been useful to editors covering the theater world. The record gives no exact date, so the portrait is best read as part of the agency's broad coverage of early twentieth-century American public life.
