Sarah Bernhardt, the French stage star, is named here in the title role of Joan of Arc, a part she played in an 1890 Paris production of a drama about the French heroine and returned to over the years. Bernhardt built her reputation on bold, often heroic roles, and newspapers regularly sought images of her in costume. The negative belongs to the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied photographs to newspapers. The record labels the title as unverified, so the link between the sitter and the role comes from the original caption data.
