The Moscow Art theater, founded in 1898 by Konstantin Stanislavski and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, is the subject named in this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency active in the early twentieth century, supplied photographs of stage productions and performers to newspapers, and this negative is one of many such images in its files. The record's title comes from caption cards that the agency itself wrote, so the attribution has not been independently verified. The theater's company, which pioneered naturalistic acting and staged Chekhov's major plays, toured the United States in 1923 and 1924, which is the period when agency photographers like Bain's would have been most likely to document its visits.
