The sitter is recorded only as Lt. L.J. Maitland, and the record notes that this name comes from caption cards and is unverified, so his rank, unit and identity remain open. The negative is one of the glass plates from the Bain News Service, the New York agency founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899 to supply newspapers with pictures of current events and notable people. Bain's plates, which the Library of Congress holds in large numbers, were made for quick reproduction in the press, so many carry only brief captions. Glass negatives of this size were common in that era and remain a useful record of the period's photography.
