Dr. F.W. Aston, the British physicist, won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1922 for using his mass spectrograph to show that many elements exist as mixtures of isotopes. He built the instrument at Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory, where it let researchers separate atoms by mass. The record gives no date, and the name comes from unverified Bain News Service data on the negative or its caption card, so the occasion of this sitting is uncertain. Bain's agency photographed newsworthy figures in the early twentieth century, and this portrait preserves the likeness of a scientist whose work reshaped chemistry.
