The name on this glass negative, Al S. Williams, is the only identifying detail in its record, and the Bain News Service supplied it without verification, so the person it refers to remains unconfirmed. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York photo agency that sold news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Bain's staff worked mostly with glass plates, which captured fine detail but broke easily and were later replaced by flexible film. Because the date is also unknown, the sitter's identity and the occasion are best approached through the agency's broader holdings, which document the people and events of that busy period.
