The record gives the sitter's name as Liang Shih Yi, but the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified data the Bain News Service wrote on its negatives or caption cards. The name most likely refers to Liang Shih-yi, a Chinese official who held senior posts in the Beiyang government during the early Republic years, roughly the 1910s and early 1920s. Bain's New York agency supplied news photographs to newspapers, so a portrait like this was probably made for press use, not as a private commission.
