The name on this glass negative, Vladimir Shavitch, comes from unverified data the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, so treat the identification with some caution. George Grantham Bain founded the Bain News Service in New York around 1899, and it supplied news photographs to newspapers for years. Its glass negatives, now held by the Library of Congress, record the people and events it covered. The record gives no date, so the portrait is best read against the early twentieth century, when newspapers depended on quickly made pictures of public figures.
