The Library of Congress catalog gives this glass negative the name W.D. Upshaw, though the record notes that the title comes from unverified data supplied by the Bain News Service, so the identification deserves some caution. George Grantham Bain founded his New York news photo service in the early 1900s, selling pictures of politicians, performers and current events to newspapers. Its glass plates document press photography in the years when glass was still the standard medium. The record gives no date, so the occasion for this sitting is unknown, but the plate reflects the working practice of its era.
