The name on this card, "Buchner Gold Coin," comes from the issuer, D. Buchner & Company, and the brand it advertised, since the Library's staff devised the title. Printed in 1887, it is a chromolithograph, a color process that layered several lithographic stones to produce bright, detailed images. Cards like this were tucked into tobacco packages in the 1880s, when manufacturers used colorful baseball images to attract buyers and encourage collecting. The card is part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection, which preserves many of these small printed pieces from the sport's early commercial years.
