A small advertising piece for a tobacco brand, this 1887 Buchner Gold Coin card carries the N284 designation that collectors use to catalog late nineteenth-century tobacco cards. D. Buchner & Company issued it to promote its product, and the cards were often packed with cigarettes or tobacco to encourage repeat purchases. Its color comes from chromolithography, a process that built the image from several printing stones or plates, one for each hue. Because these cards were produced in large numbers, they remain among the earliest widely distributed color images of baseball players. This example is part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection at the Library of Congress.
