Issued by D. Buchner & Company in 1887, this chromolithographed card belongs to the Buchner Gold Coin series, a set of baseball cards that tobacco makers packed with their products in the 1880s. Manufacturers inserted such cards as stiffeners for packages and as small incentives to buy, and the bright multicolor printing reflects the lithographic methods that made inexpensive color illustration widely available. The card comes from the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection, and the number N284 is a later catalog designation used by collectors.
