The Buchner Gold Coin card, catalogued as N284, is one of the many 1887 baseball cards issued by D. Buchner & Company, a tobacco maker whose cards were packed with its products as premiums. Its title was assigned by Library staff rather than printed on the card, so the record does not name the player shown. The card is a chromolithograph, a color printing process that layered several stones, one per hue, to produce the bright detail typical of late nineteenth-century trade cards. It belongs to the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards, which preserves these small advertising pieces as a record of how the sport was marketed to fans in the 1880s.
