Few objects from the 1880s tie baseball so closely to commerce as this Buchner Gold Coin card, catalogued as N284 and dated 1887. It was printed as a chromolithograph, a color process that let the maker render a player's portrait and team colors in bright hues on small cardboard stock. Cards like this were issued by D. Buchner & Company as part of its tobacco promotions, so they served as both an advertisement and an incentive to buy. Collectors later preserved them as early records of the game's players and teams, and this example is held in the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection at the Library of Congress.
