The Buchner Gold Coin card, catalogued as N284, is a tobacco-era trade card from 1887, when cigarette and tobacco makers slipped colorful cards into their packages to build brand loyalty. Issued by D. Buchner & Company, it was printed as a chromolithograph, a multi-stone color process that let makers reproduce bright, detailed portraits and graphics cheaply in large runs. The Library's title for the card was assigned by staff, and it is part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards, which preserves a record of how the sport was marketed in the late 1880s.
