Few 1880s baseball cards carry a brand name as bold as the Buchner Gold Coin, the tobacco firm that issued this 1887 card under the American Card Catalog number N284. Like many cards of its era, it was a chromolithograph, a color printing process that let makers produce bright, detailed images cheaply in large runs. Cards like this were usually packed with tobacco products to encourage repeat purchases and to advertise the brand. Today they give historians a window into how early professional baseball was marketed and how fans collected its images.
