Smithville Flats, a small resort area in the hills of Chenango County, New York, is the setting, and the picture centers on Maplewood Lodge, where a man identified as George Finnigan stands with hunting dogs on the porch. Around 1902 the Detroit Publishing Company was building a large body of photographs of American towns, hotels, and rural places, many of which were sold as views to travelers and promoters. Scenes like this one record the sporting life that drew visitors to the region's lodges and hunting camps. The glass negative is broken, so the surviving image is incomplete, but the porch and dogs still show how a country hotel presented itself to its guests.
