Dwight D. Eisenhower sat for this portrait around 1952, the year he won the Republican nomination and then the presidency, so the picture captures him at the threshold of national office rather than in the uniform of his wartime command. The photographic print was made by Muray of New York City, a studio known for celebrity and society portraits of the period. The caption card, which the record notes is unverified, identifies the subject as the future president, and the copyright notice shows the image was registered without later renewal.
